Manchester United fans in agreement over Raphael Varane replacement following injury

Manchester United fans are in unanimous agreement about how Erik ten Hag should cope with the possible loss of Raphael Varane for the foreseeable future.

The French defender is set for a spell on the sidelines after he suffered an injury during United's 1-1 draw with Chelsea over the weekend.

Varane came off in the 60th minute at Stamford Bridge with what was his second injury of the month, having limped off against Manchester City three weeks ago. The 29-year-old appeared to conceal tears before he walked around the pitch to the dugout unaided.

Initial reports suggest Varane could be sidelined until the World Cup next month, and it is unclear whether or not he will be back in time to feature for France in the tournament.

Varane's loss would be a huge blow to United, but fans are in agreement about how Ten Hag should replace him if he is indeed out for the next few weeks.

In a Twitter poll posted on Monday, 1,225 supporters voted on who Varane's possible replacement in defence should be, with an overwhelming 83.8 per cent voting in favour of Victor Lindelof.

Club captain Harry Maguire received the remaining 16.2 per cent of the vote as he prepares to return from a hamstring injury this week.

Speaking after the dramatic draw with Chelsea, Ten Hag was asked about Varane's latest injury setback: "Nothing at this moment. We have all seen him come off, but with an injury like this, we always have to wait a minimum of 24 hours so the medical staff can do their job and can set the diagnosis.

"I can understand (his reaction). We can all probably understand that he will be emotional, but he also has to wait. You don't know.

"He's experienced, but the medicals have to do their job, have to make an assessment, set the right diagnosis and from there on come to a conclusion."
