Manchester United fans disagree on Marcus Rashford's next role after full-time actions vs Man City

A collection of Manchester United supporters praised Marcus Rashford for the way he consoled some of his teammates after Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley - but not all of them agreed.

United's hopes of winning their second trophy of the season and derailing City's treble hopes were blocked by two Ilkay Gundogan goals. The German scored either side of a Bruno Fernandes penalty to add another piece of silverware to their collection.

It, of course, meant that the Blues are now just one win away from repeating United's historic 1998/99 treble-winning campaign. Pep Guardiola's side face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday night in Istanbul.

As frustrating and disappointing as it was for United, they can reflect on the 2022/23 campaign with a sense of pride. After a rotten 2021/22 season, standards were raised by manager Erik ten Hag and the club achieved a top four finish and won the Carabao Cup, meaning it was a hugely positive maiden season under the Dutchman.

For some members of the squad, however, the defeat to City was just that little bit too much to stomach, with the likes of Wout Weghorst and Alejandro Garnacho, who both stepped off the bench during the second half at Wembley, sinking to the turf. Garnacho looked heartbroken by the outcome and was evidently upset.

However, Rashford, who plundered 30 goals in all competitions this term - becoming the first United player since Robin van Persie a decade ago to do so - made it his mission to get those who had sank to the turf back on their feet. He went round to each of them and helped raise them to their feet ahead of going to collect their runners-up medals.

His actions earned praise from a crop of United supporters, who respected the leadership and maturity levels that he demonstrated. Some also backed him to become the club's next captain as a result of his actions, though others did not necessarily agree that he is captain material.

Commenting on a United reddit page, which was headlined 'Marcus Rashford lifting dejected teammates after the loss', here's what some of the comments said.

BennyLaa posted: "He's a good lad is our Rashy. Can't wait to see what he does next season! Great leadership!"

Looney_forner commented: "I think Bruno [Fernandes] and Casemiro are first in line (to be next captain), but maybe, yeah."

Lost_Afropick said: "Rashford's head drops too often in games to be a captain."

anonafrk remarked: "Rashford is a good team player, but main captain, I don't think he can handle that position."

FlashyCut3809 said: "Future captain for picking someone off the floor and a few claps. What on earth have we fallen to?"

dbrodes commented: "Marcus is a man now."

Interndarin posted: "Love to see this, got to stand up no matter the result."

danlawl added: "Rashford, oh my you are going to be a club legend if you keep this up."
