Manchester United fans demand Paul Mitchell appointment with club planning scouting overhaul

Manchester United lacked direction for years under the stewardship of Ed Woodward and their results on the pitch reflect that. They're now five years without a trophy and nearly a decade without a league title.

Something needed to change and with the departure of Woodward, it seems like that is finally happening. John Murtough has been appointed as United's director of football and he is set to oversee the club's footballing operation under Richard Arnold.

The Manchester Evening News understand Erik ten Hag will become the club's next permanent manager, replacing Ralf Rangnick who will move into a consultancy role. Ten Hag has a very specific style of play and if he is to be successful, a number of players will need to be signed in the summer market. Given United's track record of scouting players, however, a lot of fans aren't confident in their ability to identify the right players.

United have parted ways with chief scout Jim Lawlor and head of global scouting Marcel Bout. Lawlor was part of the scouting team under Sir Alex Ferguson and Bout was brought in under Louis van Gaal, but both have now been replaced with a view to overhauling the club's scouting network.

But that leaves a void for someone to fill. Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell has long been linked with a move to United, initially being tipped with a move to Old Trafford when they were looking to appoint a director of football before Murtough arrived.

With the club now desperately needing to get as many moves right in the transfer market as possible, United fans took to social media to call for Mitchell to be brought to Old Trafford. Here's a selection of the comments from Twitter.
