Erik Ten Hag appears to have decided upon two key members of his Manchester United backroom staff as Mitchell van der Gaag and former England manager Steve McLaren look set to join the club under the new boss.
McLaren worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at United between 1999 and 2001, enjoying a hugely successful spell. He then took the Middlesbrough job, where he guided the Teesside club to the UEFA Cup Final in 2006 before an ill-fated spell as England manager between 2006 and 2007. This led McLaren to look abroad for his next opportunity, joining FC Twente in 2008, winning the 2009/10 Eredivisie title.
His assistant at Twente was a certain Erik Ten Hag, who will now see their roles reversed as McLaren looks set to return to Old Trafford as his former protegee's right hand man. Ten Hag will also be joined by Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag, who has been Ten Hag's Ajax assistant since 2021 after managing the club's reserve team at the beginning of Ten Hag's reign.
