Manchester United 'fall behind' in Darwin Nunez race and other rumours

Manchester United could be dealt a blow in their pursuit of Benfica talisman Darwin Nunez.

Outlets in Spain are reporting that Atletico Madrid have jumped to the front of the queue of clubs looking to sign the Uruguayan striker. United's lack of attacking depth has been laid bare since the arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The German has opted to field a starting XI without a recognised striker twice and has already highlighted the need for further options up front. Edinson Cavani will be a free agent in the summer and looks unlikely to extend his contract at Old Trafford whilst Marcus Rashford has struggled for form this season.

Mundo Deportivo are reporting that the reigning Spanish champions are currently leading the race to sign the 22-year-old. It has been said that Diego Simeone is looking to bolster his striker options with Luis Suarez looking set to leave the Wanda Metropolitano.

With 33 goals in 39 games, Nunez has established himself as a prolific forward. He recently showcased his skills at Anfield, tormenting the Liverpool defence as they drew 3-3 in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, the Manchester Evening News reported recently that United had reignited their interest in Villarreal defender Pau Torres. However, another reported target, Jules Kounde, has made his intentions clear.

The French defender, according to Marca, is 'tremendously angry' after his desire to leave Sevilla was ignored. As a result, he is said to be looking for a move away in the summer. United are in the market for a defender and have been linked with the 23-year-old in the past.
