Manchester United 'failed in deadline day move for Raul de Tomas' and more transfer rumours

Manchester United reportedly failed with a deadline day bid to sign Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas.

According to Football Insider, Erik ten Hag was keen to recruit a striker and was interested in completing a deal for the 27-year-old Spanish attacker. De Thomas was open to leaving the La Liga club after 'disagreements' with new manager Diego Martinez.

The report states that the striker - who was left out of Espanyol's matchday squad in the opening three league games of the season - was keen on a move to Old Trafford, but that a move never materialised following deadline day talks.

De Thomas scored 40 goals in his last two seasons with Espanyol, including 20 last season. However, the frontman, who has won four caps for Spain, is contracted until June 2026.

Elsewhere, Il Corriere del Mezzogiorno report (via Football Italia) that United would not offer more than €80m for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, while the Serie A club would have needed to cover 50% of Cristiano Ronaldo’s salary.

Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move to Naples this summer, with the Portuguese international's agent, Jorge Mendes, looking for a Champions League club for his client.

Moreover, the report adds that United wanted to split the payment of Ronaldo’s wages throughout the season, and were willing to offer €80m for Osimhen - who would have moved in the opposite direction if the 37-year-old did leave Old Trafford. However, Napoli deny holding negotiations with United or Ronaldo.

"We have a very good rapport with his agent Jorge Mendes, but there was never anything concrete between Napoli and Cristiano Ronaldo," Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli said earlier this week.
