Manchester United facing £20m problem as Chelsea set £70m Mason Mount transfer demand

Manchester United are facing a £20million problem in their pursuit of Chelsea star Mason Mount with the two clubs still some way apart in their valuations of the 24-year-old. Mount is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge with talks over a renewal proving to be unsuccessful so far.

A source told football.london that just before the FIFA World Cup that took place last year, Mount was optimistic an agreement could be reached. However, with a new-look transfer team in place at Chelsea following the World Cup, the offer presented to the midfielder and his entourage was no longer on the table upon his return to west London.

Erik ten Hag's side are yet to make an official offer for the Blues midfielder, but senior figures at United have begun discussions with Chelsea and made clear their desire to sign the England international. Reece James admitted it would be 'sad' to see Mount leave the club this summer, whilst Ben Chilwell also urged his team-mate to stay.

Mount has since broken his silence on a potential move to Old Trafford this summer after having the question posed to him during his time at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Sky Sports F1 presenter Martin Brundle said: "He [Ben Chilwell] said you're going to Man United!" To which Mount laughed and replied: "No I'm just here to enjoy this race today, an amazing day, I can't wait to watch it!"

According to The Times, Chelsea are seeking a figure no less than £70million. However, United are only prepared to go as high as £50m with transfer talks seemingly at a standstill.

Liverpool and Arsenal have seemingly cooled their interest in the England international with United now leading the race to sign Mount this summer. However, unless the player actively pushes for a move - it seems Chelsea will only sell if their Premier League rivals match their asking price.
