Manchester United F.C. vs Southampton F.C. Stats Ahead Of Thursday’s 8pm Premier League Clash

After the doom and gloom of 2024 it has been a positive start to 2025 for Manchester United.

The Red Devils got a 2-2 draw against rivals Liverpool at Anfield in a match they could have won if it were not for Harry Maguire’s missed late chance.

They then knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup with a penalty shootout win at the Emirates – despite dropping to 10 men during the second-half.

The question will be whether they can beat the teams they are expected to prevail over. They face bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Thursday night in a match where nothing less than three points will be expected for Ruben Amorim’s side.

United Overwhelming Favourites

At the time of writing with odds subject to change, Manchester United are 2/7 favourites to win, with a stunning Southampton victory at 17/2 and a draw at 5/1.

United Beat 10-Man Southampton At St Mary’s

Manchester United will look to complete a convincing league double over Southampton when the two sides meet on Thursday.

The Red Devils – then managed by Erik ten Hag – were convincingly the better football side when the sides met at St Mary’s in September.

Southampton could have taken the lead only for Cameron Archer to hit a weak penalty which was easily saved by Andre Onana.

Matthijs de Ligt opened the scoring before Marcus Rashford doubled the lead before half-time.

Jack Stephens was sent off in the second-half for the Saints before Alejandro Garnacho wrapped up the game in stoppage-time.

Saints Have Held United To Draws In Three Of Last Four Old Trafford Meetings

If there is any motivation Southampton can take ahead of the game, it’s the fact they have proven hard to beat at Old Trafford in the past.

Three of the last four meetings at Old Trafford have seen Southampton take a point away from Manchester United.

However, the one time they were beaten at Old Trafford in that period, was a 9-0 thrashing in February 2021. Southampton were reduced to 10 men though inside the first 90 seconds.

It is the joint biggest win in Premier League history along with Southampton’s 9-0 defeat to Leicester 16 months prior, Manchester United beating Ipswich 9-0 in March 1995 and Liverpool’s triumph against Bournemouth in August 2022.
