Manchester United discover their potential Carabao Cup final opponents

Manchester United now know that they will be facing Newcastle United in the final of the Carabao Cup, should they get past Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening, after they beat Southampton 3-1 on aggregate.

Newcastle held a one-goal lead heading into the second leg of their semi-final at St James' Park thanks to Joelinton's effort last week. Inside five minutes that advantage was doubled when Sean Longstaff slotted a right-footed effort underneath the dive of Gavin Bazunu.

Longstaff added his second 15 minutes later when he converted Miguel Almiron's cross to send the Newcastle fans into raptures. Less than 10 minutes later, Che Adams capitalised on a sloppy Magpies pass to give the Saints a glimmer of hope.

Eddie Howe's side suffered a nervy final 10 minutes when Bruno Guimaraes was sent off for a challenge on Samuel Edozie. However, they managed to ride the storm to make it to the League Cup final on Sunday, February 26.

United are by no means on Wembley Way yet but they are in a very good position heading into their second leg with the East Midlands club. Goals from Marcus Rashford, Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes secured a three-goal advantage for the Reds at the City Ground.

Erik ten Hag confirmed on Tuesday that Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial will be welcomed back into the matchday squad at Old Trafford after their respective absences. However, Scott McTominay will still be missing and he is joined in the injury room by Christian Eriksen.

The Reds believe that the Dane will be out until at least late April following an ankle injury he sustained in the victory over Reading in the FA Cup at the weekend. Donny van de Beek is also out for the remainder of the season through injury.
