Manchester United discover Carabao Cup semi-final opponents

Manchester United will face Nottingham Forest in the semi-final of this year's Carabao Cup.

Erik ten Hag's side will play a two-legged tie against their fellow Premier League side with the Dutchman aiming to mark his first season in England with silverware. United will play the first leg away from home before welcoming Forest to Old Trafford for the second leg.

United's rivals Manchester City were knocked out by Southampton this evening, as goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo sunk the Blues to a 2-0 defeat on the South Coast.

The Carabao Cup's other semi-final will be contested between both Southampton and Newcastle United, with the first legs are set to take place on the week commencing January 23. The second legs will then follow on the week commencing January 30.

Still involved in the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League too this season, Ten Hag has made his intentions clear that the Reds will compete on every front during his tenure, previously stating: ''In football, is not possible to achieve perfection in every game but total effort is minimum requirement.''

United are set to host City this weekend and will look to further exstinguish any lingering memories of their 6-3 defeat earlier this season, having now lost just once in their last 18 outings in all competitions.
