Manchester United dealt transfer blow after Nottingham Forest decision

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their attempt to replace Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson this season.

David De Gea is United’s number one after Henderson was allowed to join Forest on loan in July. The Spain international was recently criticised for his performance in a 4-0 loss to Brentford but boss Erik ten Hag currently only has the experienced Tom Heaton challenging for De Gea’s place.

It was reported by ESPN that United expect Henderson to “compete for the number one spot” next season upon his return to Old Trafford. However, the club are claimed to still be searching for a new goalkeeper this summer and have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp, who has confirmed he turned down an approach from the club.

Writing on Instagram, the 32-year-old Germany international said: “Dear fans, There have been a lot of reports of interest in Manchester United in the past few days. It is true that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a world club and the fact that I can deal with and think about such an offer, I hope everyone understands.

“Yesterday, however, I informed the person in charge of both clubs that I had chosen Eintracht. I have experienced unforgettable things here with Frankfurt and we made history together. The start to the season has been bumpy, but I have absolute faith in us.”

The German side won the Europa League last term and Trapp has reaffirmed his commitment to the club. Meanwhile, Henderson has played in all three of Forest’s league games so far and described spending last season with United as the “toughest 12 months of my career” after being second-choice to De Gea.

"The conversation I had with United after the Euros was that I was going back to Old Trafford to be number one,” Henderson said. “I got COVID and when I came back I should have still been number one.

"But nobody followed through with what they told me. It was frustrating as well because I turned down so many good loans last summer. I wasted twelve months. I was fuming. I worked hard off the pitch and on the training pitch to keep myself improving day in and day out. I'm now looking forward to a good season with Forest."
