Manchester United 'consider' releasing Cristiano Ronaldo from contract and more transfer rumours

Manchester United are reportedly debating whether to release Cristiano Ronaldo from his contract in January if a buyer cannot be found.

The superstar’s future at Old Trafford looks even more insecure after being dropped from the squad to take on Chelsea this Saturday in response to heading down the tunnel before full-time in Wednesday’s win over Tottenham.

Ronaldo has since taken to Instagram to reaffirm his commitment to United. He wrote: “Sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of us.

"Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game. Giving in to the pressure is not an option.”

However, The i report that if agent Jorge Mendes cannot find client Ronaldo a new club in the new year, United may release him from his contract six months early. The 37-year-old handed in a transfer request in the summer but limited options away from United meant he ultimately stayed put.

Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News) claim Chelsea and Liverpool have joined the race for Rafael Leao, who is also said to be on Manchester City’s radar. AC Milan are hopeful of tying the attacker down to a long-term deal amid increased interest.

His current deal, which expires in 2024, reportedly contains a £130million release clause. Milan were scheduled to meet with Leao’s father to discuss his future but nothing further has been announced.

Leao has scored four times and assisted eight more this season after recording 14 goals and 12 assists last term.
