Manchester United confirm Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov for Liverpool FC charity match

Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov have become the latest former Manchester United stars to sign up for next month's charity legends match against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The duo, who racked up more than 860 appearances for the club between them, are two of five further additions to the squad for the charity encounter that will take place on Saturday, May 21. They have been joined by Nicky Butt, Dwight Yorke and Quinton Fortune.

The quintet have joined the likes of Jaap Stam, Patrice Evra and Diego Forlan in the highly-anticipated contest. The match has been arranged in aid of profits from ticket sales being donated to the Manchester United Foundation for its work with young people.

A statement released by the United Foundation said: "Manchester United Foundation is delighted to announce the latest group of players who will be returning to the Theatre of Dreams to take on Liverpool in the Legends of the North match on Saturday 21st May.

"Reds legends Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov, Nicky Butt, Dwight Yorke and Quinton Fortune are the latest quintet to be confirmed, with the likes of Diego Forlan, Jaap Stam and Patrice Evra already assembled in Bryan Robson's squad. Bulgarian forward Berbatov will be returning to Old Trafford for the first time since his departure from the club in 2012."

On returning to Old Trafford to participate in the fixture, Berbatov said: "I remember my time at Old Trafford as a really special period in my career. With this in mind, it's fantastic to have the chance to relive this when I return to Manchester to play in the Legends of the North match in May.

"Fans still mention my hat-trick against Liverpool, so I know what this game means. It’s going to be a magnificent day! When I was at the club, I always enjoyed working with the Foundation – especially the Christmas hospital visits – and I look forward to supporting them again."

Meanwhile, Yorke, who racked up 152 appearances for United between 1998 and 2022, said: "Our Foundation supports children local to Greater Manchester and around the world doing a lot of good work. These exhibition matches help to raise funds to continue that work, so I really hope to see the fans come out and support us.

"Both sets of fans will get to see some of their all-time favourite players as well – it's called Legends of the North because there is a history there with these players who have done wonderful things for these football clubs, in both teams. It should be a fantastic day."
