Manchester United confirm Lyon friendly in Scotland ahead of next season

Manchester United will return to Scotland for the first time in 13 years this summer after they confirmed a pre-season friendly against French side Lyon.

Erik ten Hag's team will take on the Ligue 1 giants at the home of Scottish rugby, Murrayfield in Edinburgh, on Wednesday, July 19 (2pm kick-off), the day before the squad jet off to the United States for a four-game tour.

It will be the fifth time the two clubs have played each other and the first since the 2008 Champions League last-16, which United won 2-1 on aggregate on their way to lifting the trophy in Moscow.

John Murtough, United's football director, is hoping the game will give young fans in Scotland the chance to see the team play live.

“Whilst as a club we have great historical links to Scotland, this will be the first time we’ve played at BT Murrayfield, and we’re really looking forward to performing in front of our Scottish fans in what will be a great occasion in a world-class sporting venue," he said.

“This is an important competitive match for our squad as we commence our preparations for the season ahead. With a 14.00 kick-off during the school holidays, we hope many families and young fans from all over Scotland and the UK will be able to travel to the game.”

The fixture is the fifth United have so far confirmed for this pre-season. They will play Arsenal in New Jersey (July 22), Wrexham in San Diego (July 25), Real Madrid in Houston (July 26) and Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas (July 30) during their US tour.

Tickets for the game with Lyon at Murrayfield go on sale to who have pre-registered and to season ticket holders, official members and executive club members from 6pm today (Tuesday), with tickets on general sale from 12pm on Thursday.
