Manchester United captain Harry Maguire jeered by England fans before Switzerland game

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was the subject of 'jeers' by England supporters as his name was read out at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.

Maguire has been the target of criticism from United fans this season following a poor run of form for his club of late. Many supporters, and some pundits, have questioned how Maguire still holds the armband at Old Trafford due to his performances.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick had to dispel rumours that he was looking at replacing the former Leicester City man with Cristiano Ronaldo for the role. Rangnick said in February: "I think after he came back after his injury, he did extremely well, with a very good performance against West Ham.

"In the last two games, he had some weaker moments, both against Southampton and when we conceded the goal against Burnley. He is our captain, and I don't see any reason to change that, but he is a player who has to develop and get better, like all the other players."

Despite Rangnick's backing, Maguire's call-up to the England squad was met with surprise and some England fans have voiced their displeasure towards the centre half despite the United man starting on the bench against Switzerland. According to PA Sport on Twitter, Maguire's name was met with a 'smattering of jeers around Wembley', a claimed backed up by other fans posting on social media.

England face Switzerland in a friendly this evening as they prepare for the World Cup in Qatar this winter. Manchester City's John Stones and Wolves' Conor Coady were named in defence for Gareth Southgate's men ahead of Maguire, however Stones had to pull out through injury.

Despite, Stones' late injury, Arsenal's Ben White was chosen to take the City man's place ahead of United's captain.
