Manchester United can't take full advantage of game in hand over Newcastle thanks to late Olise goal

Manchester United move one point and one place ahead of Newcastle United - but failed to take full advantage as they were held by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, ending their nine-match winning run.

Erik ten Hag's side played their game in hand in south London, but a late Michael Olise stunning free-kick cancelled out Bruno Fernandes' effort as the game finished 1-1. That means the Red Devils move a point ahead of Eddie Howe's side in third, but both teams have now played the same number of games.

Olise's late strike means they now head to leaders Arsenal on Sunday eight points adrift and missing key midfielder Casemiro, who will be suspended after picking up a fifth booking of the season late on.

Manchester United debutant Wout Weghorst nearly opened his account for his new side, directing a first-half header over the crossbar, while a brilliant stop by David De Gea denied the hosts from taking a first half lead.

Fernandes handed the visitors the lead just before the halfway point, and United seemed poised to make it 10 wins in a row in all competitions before Olise levelled.

Newcastle head to Selhurst Park on Saturday evening looking to maintain their unbeaten run, while Manchester United take on Arsenal on Sunday.
