Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag told Marcel Sabitzer's best position

Manchester United have been told that Marcel Sabitzer operates best in an attacking role in the midfield.

Sabitzer, 28, arrived at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to complete a proposed loan move from Bayern Munich after Erik ten Hag and his team were rocked by an injury to Christian Eriksen. He will miss at least three months with an ankle problem picked up during the FA Cup fourth round win over Reading on Saturday.

As a result, United were forced into the transfer market before the 11pm deadline. Sabitzer jetted into the UK for his Premier League switch after the clubs involved came to an agreement.

Sabitzer has played 54 games for Bayern since his move from RB Leipzig last summer. During his time with the two Bundesliga sides, the 28-year-old has predominantly been deployed in central areas - but he played further up the field earlier in his career and for the national team.

According to former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann, it is in those advanced positions that Sabitzer plays his best football, although he has been signed to replace Eriksen in a deeper role. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamann said: "He's a very energetic player, he has got a good engine, he can nick a goal.

"His best position is probably a bit further forward. I don't think he's a defensive or a holding midfielder."
