Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag told his 'good signing' was the difference vs West Ham

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has heaped praise on Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez following the Reds' victory over West Ham.

United took the lead late in the first half thanks to a Marcus Rashford header. The goal would mark the forward's 100th for the club and ensured that he made the back pages for all the right reasons.

However, it was United's rearguard which ensured the three points remained in the north west. David de Gea's last gasp, world class save denied the Hammers an equaliser.

Despite the goalkeeper's heroics, it was Martinez who caught the eye of Redknapp having enjoyed a dominant display at centre-back for the Reds and the former Spurs boss has named the Argentine in his team of the week. Speaking to BetVictor, he explained: "United rode their luck at times against West Ham but defended well enough to get the win and a clean sheet.

"David de Gea got most of the plaudits, but I thought Lisandro Martinez was fantastic. He reads them game so well. I think he looks a good signing by [Erik] Ten Hag."

The three points could prove vital in the race for the Champions League this season. Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle were all victorious over the weekend but Chelsea lost 4-1 at Brighton, a result which could see the London club slip behind their top four rivals.

United will not play a home match in the Premier League until after the World Cup now. Ten Hag's team will return to action though on Thursday when they travel to Real Sociedad in their final Europa League group game, knowing a victory could see them top Group E.

Redknapp's team of the week in full: Pickford; Trippier, Martinez, Tarkowski, Mitchell; Almiron, Neves, Bentancur; Summerville, Wilson, Moore.
