Andre Onana has responded to Nemanja Matic, who described him as "one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history", by pointing to his trophy haul.

Matic and Onana are set to face off on Thursday as Lyon host United in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Onana said ahead of the game that United were "way better" than their French counterparts, prompting former United midfielder Matic to direct a blistering barb at the keeper.

"If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United's history, you need to take care of what you are talking (about)," he told reporters.

"If David De Gea or Peter Schmeichel or (Edwin) van der Sar said that, then I would question myself."

Onana has since responded, insisting he meant no disrespect to Lyon, but could not resist returning fire at Matic.

He said: "I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent.

“We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud."

"At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same."

Onana has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with United while Matic, a Premier League winner with Chelsea, went empty-handed during five seasons at Old Trafford.
