Manchester United and Erik ten Hag stance on potential Nottingham Forest transfer revealed

After promotion celebrations die down, Nottingham Forest’s attention will return to preparing for the Premier League next season.

Steve Cooper’s men earned their place among England’s elite with a victory in the play-off final against Huddersfield Town this weekend (May 29). An own goal from Levi Colwill was enough to separate the two teams and start the party in the Nottingham end of Wembley Stadium.

Forest midfielder James Garner played a big part in the winning goal, putting the ball into the box that caused the defender to put it into his own net. The 21-year-old has been on loan with the club from Manchester United for the last 18 months.

Like with their other loan players, Forest are likely to look into the possibility of bringing Garner back beyond the summer, either on a permanent or loan basis. But Premier League restrictions do mean that the team will only be allowed to register two loan players next season.

Forest are also reported to have competition for a summer move for Garner, with Leicester City the latest club to be credited with an interest in the midfielder. However, it seems that clubs eyeing a move, including Forest, will now face a wait to see if it will be possible this transfer window.

The Manchester Evening News report that new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is keen to watch Garner before deciding on the player’s future. He is expected to return to pre-season training in late June as the second group of players returning to Carrington after joining up with England U21s this summer.

It is said that should it be decided that Garner is sent out on loan again, then United are keen for him to go to a Premier League club, something that Forest are now able to offer. Should they wish to bring the player back to the City Ground, it seems that Forest will have to wait until later in the transfer window to do so.
