Manchester United aiming to sell defenders before buying centre-back

Manchester United believe they will have to sell in order to reinforce their defence amid interest in signing a centre-back.

The Manchester Evening News revealed in April United are targeting a centre half and manager Erik ten Hag championed Jurrien Timber of Ajax, his preferred choice, last month.

Timber, 21, has said he would be content with staying at Ajax and United have shortlisted Villarreal defender Pau Torres and David Carmo of Braga among their alternatives.

United are primarily approaching targets familiar to Ten Hag in the market and Argentina international Lisandro Martinez partnered Timber for the majority of last season.

Ten Hag will inherit 13 defenders who have played for the United first-team and the bloated department could delay the arrival of a new centre-back.

United endured their worst defensive season since 1978-79 last term, shipping 57 goals and suffering six defeats where the opposition scored at least four times. Ten Hag wants a credible competitor for Harry Maguire, who is not certain of retaining the captaincy.

Defenders Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have outlined their intention to leave United to teammates while Axel Tuanzebe is also available for transfer, although sources have described his situation as "delicate" as he prepares to return to United after two disappointing loans with Aston Villa and Napoli.

Figures at United regard Luke Shaw as a top drawer full-back despite his comedown from a superb 2020-21 season and European Championship campaign with England. United have informed Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams they are free to leave, which could give them leverage to recruit an upgrade at full-back.

United recruited Spanish full-backs Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez from Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2020 and the former was an ever-present in the Under-18s' FA Youth Cup-winning campaign. Fernandez received the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.
