Manchester United ace Amad recalled to Ivory Coast squad ahead of AFCON qualifiers

Manchester United star Amad has been recalled to the Ivory Coast squad ahead of the upcoming international break later this month.

The 20-year-old, who is spending the season on loan at Championship side Sunderland, has been rewarded with a call-up after impressing for the Black Cats. The attacker has registered eight goals and three assists in 31 appearances in all competitions this season.

Amad has not played for Ivory Coast since 2021, with the United man having represented his country on three occasions. He featured in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Niger and played in friendly matches against Ghana and Burkina Faso - scoring in the latter.

Ivory Coast are set to play Comoros twice in qualification for the next Africa Cup of Nations. Manager Jean-Louis Gasset has named a 23-man squad for the two matches, including another United loanee in Eric Bailly, who is currently with Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.

Former Reds man Wilfried Zaha is not part of the group, while Sebastien Haller has been included after his comeback at Borussia Dortmund.

Amad will be desperate to prove his fitness after missing Sunderland's 1-0 win at Norwich City on Sunday. Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray also confirmed that he would be absent for the Championship game against Sheffield United at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night.

However, he did suggest that the loanee should be available for the weekend clash with Luton Town.

"I think 30-odd games from never having a run of three games on the bounce has proved his body has almost shut down," Mowbray told club media. "His hamstrings are really sore and tight. There is no tear and there is no damage.

"He is just in a place where we need to give him a break and check him out of the equation for a week, at the most, and then he will finish the season strong, I am sure."

Amad has made nine appearances for United's first team since joining from Atalanta in 2021.
