Manchester United (4-3-3)
André Onana Could not be criticised for the goal as there was little he could do with Coman one-on-one on an otherwise quiet night. 6/10
Diogo Dalot Required to switch sides after the break, which is not a simple task considering what he was up against, but was unfazed. 6
Raphaël Varane Proved his experience and knowhow with a number of crucial interventions in the box, something United have missed in recent months. 7
Harry Maguire Continued his fine form in difficult circumstances but his game was cut short when he pulled up with a groin injury. 7
Luke Shaw Held his own against a rampant duo down his side, although this might explain why he only lasted 45 gruelling minutes. 7
Sofyan Amrabat Dropped between the centre-backs to allow the full-backs to push forward but was not good enough in possession and picked up a needless booking. 6
Scott McTominay Unsurprisingly showed real willingness but was ineffective in an advanced midfield role. In the Champions League, running will only get a midfielder so far. 6
Bruno Fernandes Smart in possession but when the crucial moments arrived could not provide the necessary composure. 6
Antony Offered his array of nice touches and the pretence that he could create a chance but, as is often the case, provided no end product. 4
Alejandro Garnacho Aggressive in his attacking and defensive work. He looked the most dangerous of United’s players but had little assistance. 7
Rasmus Højlund Struggled with the physicality of Bayern Munich’s centre-backs, not that he received the ball often enough to cause problems. 5
Substitutes: Jonny Evans Slotted on to the right-hand side of the centre-back pairing and did not look out of place, 6; Aaron Wan-Bissaka Played Coman onside with a momentary lapse in concentration, 6; Facundo Pellestri Limited options on the bench made the Uruguayan the obvious candidate but he provided nothing, 6; Hannibal Mejbri Energetic in a lethargic team, 6; Kobbie Mainoo n/a.
Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1)
Manuel Neuer Could have brought a deckchair, even if the Manchester weather was not the most agreeable. 6
Noussair Mazraoui Impressive on overlap to create a further problem for Shaw to deal with. Coped well with the constant threat of Garnacho. 7
Dayot Upamecano Spent most of the match as an educator, teaching Højlund how difficult the Champions League is. 8
Kim Min-jae On the odd occasion Upamecano could not deal with a situation by himself, his colleague was there to sweep up. 7
Alphonso Davies Rampaged up and down the left flank to cause and solve problems as he outwitted Antony. 7
Leon Goretzka Moved the ball up the pitch quickly and instigated counterattacks which caused problems for United’s defence. 8
Joshua Kimmich Calm as always in midfield, he helped Bayern dominate possession and position. 7
Kingsley Coman Maintained composure after a smart run into the box to score the winner as part of the most incisive move of the match. 7
Jamal Musiala Dropped deep at times to help speed up Bayern’s attacks as part of a very fluid attacking four but went quiet after the break before being subbed. 7
Leroy Sané Used his pace to cut through the middle of the hosts, before deciding to pass rather than shoot from six yards when he looked likely to score. 6
Harry Kane Drifted between a No 9 and 10 role. Arguably should have spent more time in the opposition box to get on the end of moves but provided a fine assist. 7
Substitutes: Konrad Laimer Seamlessly slotted in at right-back, 7; Thomas Müller Knows all there is to know about seeing out a Champions League night, 6; Mathys Tel n/a; Raphael Guerreiro n/a.
