Manchester sandwich shop forced to close just three months after opening as rent doubles

A popular sandwich and burger bar has been forced to close after it's rent soared in price.

Super Happy has been serving its popular sandwiches from a counter at Ducie Street Warehouse in the Northern Quarter since September - and recently launched a new burger concept named 'Now That's A Burger'. The two ideas come from the same team behind independent bakehouse, Batard.

Batard is well-known for its breads and baked goods, and first popped up at Withington Public Hall Institute before opening a on-site bakery and kitchen at co-working space Seesaw in September, last year. In March, it was announced the brand would be moving from Princess Street and joining a host of food operators at Escape to Freight Island - the former railway depot turned outdoor urban beer garden and food hall.

Then, in late September this year, it opened up Super Happy MCR at Ducie Street, selling everything from huge subs and hot dogs to McDonald’s-style apple pie. Unfortunately, despite it's popularity, the owners have announced this week will be its last at the Northern Quarter venue as its rent has "essentially doubled".

The owners said that they've tried to 'find a way to make it work' but the 'numbers just don't add up'. The shop will now close before Christmas and will be taking a break while they try and find a new location for the business.

In a post shared to Instagram, the owners wrote: "Bye for now. Bit of naff news but this week will be our last for a while. Pretty gutted tbh.

"Last week we were informed by our landlord that our rent will essentially be doubling starting on the 31st of this month. We’ve tried to find a way (any way) to make it work here but it just doesn’t seem that’s possible right now.

"The numbers just don’t add up unfortunately. On such short notice, after a rebrand and only just settling in at a new unit we just aren’t able to adjust and continue trading going in to January. Soooo we are wrapping up here for Xmas a bit prematurely.

"We’ve been lucky to build a truly incredible and talented team. So we don’t plan on stopping for good (but who knows) hopefully just taking a little break whilst we sort out a space we can call home.

"So for this week come say hello/goodbye. Grab a sandwich, a bake or a burger and see us off in style. (PLZ SHARE TO GET THAT INFO OUT THERE X)."

Those that saw the post were quick to jump into the comments and express their sympathy for Super Happy, including both customers and other local businesses. One wrote: "So sad to hear this mate, this economy is absolutely f***ed. We'll be sure to come down this week and say hi."

Another commented: "Why are landlords so greedy?! What goes around, comes around. Best wishes for whatever comes next!" And a third person wrote: "Kin ellll! That's so rubbish but onwards and upwards. Rest up and hopefully you find another venue v soon!"
