A train operator is telling customers to not travel on some routes tomorrow as temperatures are to reach the high 30s. Northern Rail has told people to not travel between Manchester and Hadfield, in Derbyshire, or Manchester and Crewe, Cheshire, while all rail travel in the North East, East Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber is advised against.
At the time of writing north west travel advice is 'only travel if essential', but Northern has just updated this to 'DO NOT TRAVEL' for the Manchester to Hadfield and Manchester to Crewe routes. The Hadfield service stops at stations including Guide Bridge, Newton for Hyde, Hattersley, and Glossop, while the Crewe route goes through Stockport, Wilmslow and Holmes Chapel.
A statement on the Northern website says: "We will be reducing the number of trains running and journey times will be significantly extended due to speed restrictions in place. Additionally, some routes will be closed completely."

It adds: "You should only attempt to travel if absolutely essential and check regularly before travelling. Some routes will be closed completely, especially on Tuesday in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber and you should not attempt to travel as there will be no alternative options. Online journey planners will be updated as soon as possible but some changes may not show until the day of travel so we advise to keep checking back."
Network Rail says intense heat can cause rails to 'buckle', which is when the rail curves. Most trains will have been running at a slower speed today to counteract this, but many services have had to be cancelled completely.
Tickets bought for travel today or tomorrow are valid on Wednesday, when the temperature is set to drop drastically. Fee-free refunds are also available to those who choose not to travel, Northern say.
Their website added: "Services in and around Manchester and the North West are subject to short notice cancellations. We encourage everyone to plan ahead and recheck before travelling."
