Like the movies of the same name, you’ll be able to enjoy a ‘night at the museum’ when the Manchester Museum reopens this month. It’s launching a new series of film and music nights called ‘Museum Lates’.
The museum will open late each Wednesday, until 9pm, from February 22. The first Museum Lates night then happens on March 8, when it will be hosting a special film night.
Held to coincide with International Women’s Day, three of the museum’s galleries will be screening movies. The fossils gallery will be screening Kate Winslet movie Ammonite, about pioneering fossil hunter Mary Anning.

Meanwhile, the 2020 movie Luxor, starring Andrea Riseborough, will be shown in the main hall, next to the Golden Mummies of Egypt exhibition, while the celebrated 2022 documentary The Seeds of Vandana Shiva will screen in the lecture hall.
Each week, the Museum Lates night will champion different subjects and themes, and will feature performances, talks and screenings from musicians, artists, writers and other performers.
Esme Ward, director of Manchester Museum, said: “We’re delighted to announce a wonderful series of events as part of our spring season. Our events and collaborations are more imaginative, caring and inclusive than ever before.
“The museum is full of incredible stories and free activities made for families, young people, students, and adults will help you make the most out of the museum and take a deep dive into some of the most fascinating objects on display.
“2023 is set to be the most exciting year in the museum’s long history and we hope as many people as possible will join the celebrations – there really is something for everyone.”
Most of the events will be free, but booking is recommended through the museum’s website. The museum opens again on February 18, following its lengthy closure and a multi-million pound refurbishment, including a new two-storey extension, brand new galleries and a new cafe and communal areas.
Other upcoming events include a new series of events called Manchester Meets, the first being a lecture from Manchester University’s Professor of Public History, David Olusoga OBE on March 16, while March 29 will find the museum hosting a special iftar event, with ‘food, friendship and conversation’ to celebrate Ramadan.
