Manchester has been named among best cities in the world

Manchester has been named one of the best cities in the world for 2023, but you may need to scroll quite far down the list to find it's ranking.

London topped the charts of World's Best Cities rankings, beating Paris and New York into second and third place respectively, while Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow all appeared within the top 100. In this latest edition of World's Best Cities, the organisation behind it ranks the world's best cities with population of more than a million.

Using a combination of criteria from six categories including sense of place, connectivity and attractions, culture and nightlife and prosperity, the final list is decided. The capital was the only UK city to make it into the top 50, however Ireland's capital, Dublin, came in 19th position, just ahead of Istanbul, Las Vegas and Milan.

Ranking in 80th position, Manchester was highlighted for it's "coveted" university and "strategic" location for business, all of which the guide said adds to "a historic sense of place". The city scored highest in the 'product' category due to its educational institutions, airport connectivity and attractions - with both the People's History Museum and Manchester Museum receiving a mention too.

The Guide states: "Manchester's reputation as the bucking engine of English industry drives a global curiosity in the storied city. Castlefield, an "Urban Heritage Park," is one portal into the that storied past: the canal running through Manchester formerly transported coal into the city's industrial hub, but today transports tourist through its historic waters. More urban reuse is planned.

"The University of Manchester scores the city of one its highest rankings globally (#30) in the Product category, which also measures Airport Connectivity (#35) as well as attractions (#78). The university is home to a dazzling legacy of 25 Nobel laurates, among whom serval currently remain on staff.

"Manchester’s conversion from producing goods to ideas is well underway, and the history of the workers who made that possible is on grand display at the People’s History Museum. The city’s middling Museums rankings about to be supercharged with the early 2023 reopening of the Manchester Museum's £18-million transformation that will add a two-storey extension that includes a new Exhibition Hall, Belonging Gallery, South Asia Gallery and Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery. No wonder Manchester is #7for Google Trends (soccer aside)."

Manchester slightly trailed Northern neighbour Liverpool, which ranked in 77th position, and was credited as "the city that helped win wars and change history". It ranked highly for its sights and landmarks as well as its nightlife, and the guide even referred to Liverpool FC as "the UK's most storied club".

Taking poll position, for the seventh year running, London with its metro population of 11 million, was praised for its exciting restaurant scene, appearing on social media as the 'hashtag capital of the world', and for its portfolio if luxury properties.
