Manchester United's unbeaten Premier League run came to a crushing end as they were thrashed 6-3 at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils were four-nil down at the break thanks to a first-half blitz from Pep Guardiola's side as Erling Haaland and Phil Foden grabbed a brace each, with Kevin de Bruyne providing two assists in the process.
Although Antony gave United a glimmer of hope with his second goal in two Premier League matches, City made sure of the points as Haaland added his third of the afternoon with a thumping finish. Foden then joined the hat-trick party by netting City's sixth as he slammed in the ball into the bottom corner.
United mounted a mini fightback courtesy of Anthony Martial's late brace but it was too little too late as City ran out comfortable winners at the Etihad Stadium.
So, with that in mind, here are the winners and losers from the Manchester derby.
Winners
Phil Foden
Having received some criticism after his performance in England's 3-3 draw with Germany, Foden responded to the critics as he scored his first-ever senior hat-trick.
The 22-year-old lined-up on the right of the City front-three with Haaland through the middle and Grealish on the left. Foden hasn't played much in that position before this season, with Guardiola opting to use Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling on the right-hand side in recent years.
But there seems to be a change in the mould with City using an out and out no.9, which has seen Foden move out to the wing more often, and he is relishing in that role. His all-round performance in the Manchester derby was sublime, with Foden opening the scoring inside the first 10 minutes with a cool first-time finish.
Foden's second was a little more simple after being teed up by Haaland, before slotting home from close-range. He is showing maturity beyond his years and that showed as he completed his hat-trick. You often see players slashing at the ball when under pressure, but Foden slowed himself down before slotting the ball into the near post with ease. It was a fine finish that capped off a special performance from a special player.
Erling Haaland
A lot of talk before the game centred around Haaland and how he could potentially cope with the pressure of a Manchester derby. However, there is no doubt he conquered those fears with another remarkable performance.
The 22-year-old made a quiet start to the game but burst into life as he scored his first of the afternoon in the 34th minute. Kevin de Bruyne's corner was headed home by Haaland despite the best efforts from Tyrell Malacia, who tried to clear the ball off the line. The goal was given to the delight of the City faithful as they witnessed Haaland score for the sixth successive Premier League game.
Moments later, Haaland added his second with another superb finish. De Bruyne was again the provider as he delivered an inch-perfect cross into the path of the Norwegian, who stretched and tucked the ball into the back of the net beyond a despairing David de Gea. Haaland then completed his hat-trick on 64 minutes with a fine finish after a pinpoint delivery from Sergio Gomez.
Pep Guardiola
There were a lot of questions raised about Guardiola's team selection before the game with Rodri ruled out through injury and Nathan Ake chosen over Ruben Dias in defence. Gary Neville even tweeted about how confident he was, having saw the two sides, but how he was proved wrong as City ran out comfortable winners.
Guardiola decided to play with three attack-minded players in midfield in Rodri's absence, with Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne as the trio, and it was a formula that worked. City dominated in midfield and controlled the game throughout the first-half, leading to their four-goal haul as they ended the game at the break.
At the back, City looked comfortable until Guardiola made four changes with the score-line at 6-1, and Ake was mightily impressive alongside Manuel Akanji in defence. Aymeric Laporte was amongst the cavalry to come on and City looked a little disjointed as United added two late goals to reduce the arrears.
Losers
Erik ten Hag
After an up-turn in form and a renewed sense of promise, United came crashing down to earth against the reigning champions and Ten Hag will no doubt receive some criticism for his team selection.
The Red Devils lined up with two attacking midfielders in Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen and it meant they were outrun when City had the ball as there was little defensive protection. Scott McTominay didn't have his best game, but questions will be asked about why Casemiro wasn't in the starting XI.
He would've surely been perfect for a game like that, given his experience and knowhow in the big matches, having experienced the El Clasico on a number of occasions. Ten Hag decided to stick to his winning formula, but it didn't work as City dominated the midfield battle. Casemiro came on with 30 minutes to go but it was too little too late as United suffered their first defeat in the Premier League since August 13.
Diogo Dalot
You could pick any of the United back-line as a loser from that one, but Dalot set the bar in the second minute when he received a booking for a foul on Jack Grealish. That didn't help as the Portuguese right-back had to play with caution and that gave the likes of Grealish and Bernardo more time on the left-hand side.
Dalot could've been tighter to Bernardo who crossed for the opening goal, while he was caught napping for Foden's second as Haaland ran down his channel. It was a disappointing performance from Dalot, who has showed promise in recent weeks but he must improve his defensive work if he is going to cement a place in Ten Hag's starting XI in the long-term. United were linked with a right-back in the summer but chose to stick with what they've got.
Raphael Varane
United's afternoon went from bad to worse when Raphael Varane limped off just before half-time. The former Real Madrid defender was taken off after appearing to roll his ankle following a shot from Foden. Varane had blocked his effort but landed uncomfortably on his ankle.
It looked a strange one at the time, but Varane stayed down for just over a minute before being substituted for Victor Lindelof. Varane didn't put in the greatest performance and was out of position for City's first goal as he didn't anticipate the cut-back.
However, this could be a major blow for the Red Devils if Varane is out for the long-term given his up-turn in form in recent weeks. Harry Maguire is also currently out injured which could give Ten Hag a headache ahead of their Europa League game against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday night.
