A general view of Etihad Stadium - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Manchester City face Tottenham Hotspur today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

An extraordinary scoreline at the Etihad sees Manchester City's woes deepened by a ruthless Tottenham team, who run out 4-0 winners thanks to two goals in either half. The Premier League champions' fifth straight defeat leaves their title defence in disarray, but Spurs won't care. On his 28th birthday, Maddison bagged a brace within 20 minutes, before City missed a whole host of half-chances. Porro then scored against his old club to put the game out of reach, and Johnson applied the finishing touch during stoppage time, having recently arrived from the bench - in the end, the visitors' xG of 2.51 exceeded that of their hosts (2.15) and they put on a perfect counter-attacking performance. As a result of this latest setback, City could trail Liverpool by eight points heading into next week's showdown at Anfield, before which they must tackle Feyenoord in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Spurs can celebrate a superb success before hosting Roma and then Fulham over the next few days. That's all from today's live coverage, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!

Since the introduction of Grealish and De Bruyne, City have marginally improved, but the quality of their play in the final third remains well below their best. Tottenham are defending a healhty lead well, knowing that three points will soon be theirs.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

19:17

Akanji shoots from the edge of the box, but it's blocked by Maddison and goes behind for a corner. From the set-piece, De Bruyne then has an attempt blocked, before Bernardo Silva volleys over a Grealish cross.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

19:13

GOOD STOP! Vicario is alert again, as De Bruyne plays through Haaland in the area, before the big striker unleashes a powerful goalbound strike. Spurs' number one stopper keeps it out, and duly celebrates!

Foden does well to escape two defenders and then tee up a shooting position. However, his ambitious attempt from more than 20 yards out only dribbles tamely towards Vicario, who fields the ball easily.

Even with 20 minutes plus stoppage time remaining, Manchester City seem resigned to their fate. They're having all of the ball, but it's clear they lack belief. Without Rodri, Kovacic or even the benched De Bruyne, the champions are short of presence in midfield.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

19:02

Summing up his day so far, Haaland leaps highest in the box to meet a stood-up cross from the left by Gvardiol, but he can't control his header at full stretch. It flies high over the crossbar.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

19:01

SHARP STOP! Ederson stops City conceding four! The outstanding Kulusevski surges inside from the right flank at the end of a rapid counter-attack, then fires in a low shot towards the near post. Ederson is equal to it, though, and makes a close-range save!

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:59

Savinho drifts over a high cross from the right, and it finds Gvardiol on the left side of the area. Unmarked, he has time to control it before shooting, but it's another wayward effort that fizzes over the crossbar.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:55

Gvardiol arrives on the edge of the area and drives a powerful shot at the target. It's well blocked, though, as the visitors' resistance continues.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:55

OFF THE BAR! That's better from City! Bissouma loses the ball to Haaland, who turns on the right side of the area and tries to find the net from a tight angle. His shot clips the top of the crossbar, and Tottenham escape a major scare!

For context, this is the first time that Man City have been 3-0 down at home in a Premier League match since February 2016, when Manuel Pellegrini was manager. This simply doesn't happen to Guardiola's City squad - but now it is.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:51

So far, there's been very little response from Manchester City in the driving rain. If anything, Spurs look very comfortable, largely defending central areas and allowing their hosts to take either flank.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:43

In a subdued start to the second half, both sides have had long spells of possession. The onus is on City to push forward, as Spurs can afford to keep the ball and run down the clock.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:41

Under Guardiola (since 2016-17), Man City have lost more Premier League games (six) and conceded more goals (24) against Tottenham than they have versus any other opponent. Indeed, they've beaten their bogey side just three times in 10 league meetings, and that trend is on course to continue today.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:38

City kick off, and we are back under way in Manchester!

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:36

Substitution John Stones Nathan Benjamin Aké

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:33

Although City are amid an awful run of form by their own lofty standards, they have previously proved equal to turning two-goal deficits around. They've ultimately won both of their last two Premier League games when trailing by two or more goals at half-time - in fact, their last such win came against Spurs in January 2023, when they recovered to secure a 4-2 victory. There's still all to play for after the interval, then.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:30

Manchester City's dismal run is on course to continue at half-time of their home clash with Tottenham, as the Premier League champions trail 2-0. Maddison has struck twice on his birthday, with the first coming totally against the run of play - City had started strongly, but Haaland fluffed a couple of chances - so Spurs are in a strong position to improve their already excellent record against Guardiola and co. While the hosts are actually ahead on xG - leading 1.13 to Tottenham's 0.98 - they've failed to capitalise and are in distinct danger of losing a fifth straight game. It remains to be seen, though, whether Spurs can hold on for another 45 minutes and secure three precious points.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:24

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-2 TOTTENHAM

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:23

Spurs have a free-kick near the left corner, but instead of delivering it into the box, they opt to play short and keep possession. They don't want to get hit on the counter-attack at this stage.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:22

There will be at least three minutes added to the end of this first half, which has flown by. Spurs are in Man City territory, taking their time on the ball and trying to ensure they keep their two-goal lead intact until half-time.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:19

Foden tries an acrobatic attempt near the penalty spot, and though he does make contact with Bernardo Silva's tempting cross, he sends the ball scudding several yards wide. Can City make this latest spell of pressure pay and get a goal back before the break?

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:18

Once again, Kulusevski brushes off his marker and drives into the area. He then cuts a low ball back for Bissouma, who blasts a wayward effort well over the crossbar from around 20 yards out.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:16

Greeted by jeers and whistles from the home fans, Vicario returns to his feet and resumes his role between the posts. The game resumes, with half-time fast approaching.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:15

A frantic first half is finally paused, as Vicario stays down on the turf and calls for medical attention. Both teams take on drinks and some tactical instruction during the break.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:14

CLOSE! Spurs escape after making a glaring error, as Porro's headed backpass is easily cut out by a lurking Savinho. The Man City winger then tries to lob Vicario, but the goalkeeper makes a smart stop on the edge of his area!

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:12

When Haaland can't quite wriggle free to shoot from the edge of the area, the ball ultimately breaks for Savinho. He takes aim for the bottom-left corner, but Vicario is down quickly to deny him. In the end, it's a fairly routine save, and Savinho's wait for a first City goal goes on.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:10

Maddison's brace is the earliest any player has ever scored away from home against reigning Premier League champions, and he's having quite a birthday so far. It's also the earliest that Man City have been 2-0 down in a league fixture at the Etihad since December 2019.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:07

After Udogie brings down Walker near the byline, City have a free-kick in a dangerous position. Foden whips it across the box, just behind a mass of players, but Savinho can't control the ball and the chance to get a shot off quickly evaporates.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:06

Gvardiol finds Savinho with a ball into the box, and the Brazilian meets it with a diving header, which Vicario dives down to palm away. It turns out he was offside in any case, but it was a good move.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:03

SAVE! Solanke thumps a rising shot towards the target from just inside the box, but Ederson reaches up and gets a fingertip to the striker's attempt! That's another corner for Spurs, who are full of confidence now.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:03

A driven cross from the left by Gvardiol is met by Foden in the box, but the latter's first-time attempt is diverted well wide of the far post. They are far from their fluent best, but the champions are certainly fighting hard to reduce their deficit.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

18:01

Maddison's inswinging corner from the left is punched clear of the area by Ederson, and City eventually clear their lines. Considering how they started this match with such authority, the hosts have been seriously struggling since conceding the first goal.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:59

CLOSE! Haaland comes close again, driving into the box and firing in a shot that flashes just over the target! It's wide open at the Etihad, where City are desperately seeking a goal back before half-time.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:52

SUPER SAVE! Son fires in a fizzing drive, which is bound for the top-right corner, but Ederson flies across to his left and tips it away at full stretch! Suddenly, Spurs are in the ascendancy.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:52

Goal James Daniel Maddison

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:51

Man City are trying to strike straight back, and come pretty close to doing so. Although Vicario leaps up and flings an arm at it, Foden's prodded finish loops over the crossbar by a few feet.

SAVE! Vicario denies Haaland with his leg! After drifting inside, Savinho sets up his striker to shoot from close range, but Haaland's low shot lacks precision and allows Spurs' goalkeeper to divert the ball away!

Goal James Daniel Maddison

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:44

Bissouma again topples Foden in midfield, conceding a free-kick. He really will have to be more careful, having been shown such an early yellow card.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:42

Promptly ending Tottenham's first foray upfield, Kulusevski is flagged for offside. The visitors are clearly going to focus on counter-attacking their hosts, as getting hold of the ball is proving difficult - they've had a 33% share so far.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:40

Maddison is on hand to neatly turn and volley the ball away from immediate danger following an inswinging corner by Gundogan. So far, it's all City, and Spurs are having to suffer without the ball.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:38

City have started fluently, as their sky-blue jerseys buzz around and passes are quickly exchanged in the Tottenham half. Space opens up for Haaland, but after taking too many touches to set himself, the big striker's scuffed effort deflects wide off Davies.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:37

Following the foul on Foden, Gundogan clips over a free-kick into the box. Akanji meets it first but heads the ball well wide of the far post. It's been a sluggish start by Spurs.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:32

Both teams are out on the pitch, with Man City's players all applauding Rodri, who shows his Ballon D'Or off to the home fans. Kick-off in this Premier League contest is now just moments away!

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:28

Spurs start a spell without Rodrigo Bentancur, who must serve a seven-match ban, so Bissouma is one of three men brought into the visitors' lineup; Maddison and Davies also come in. Micky van de Ven, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert join Cristian Romero in the treatment room.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:23

City make three changes, with one enforced by an injury to Mateo Kovacic, who has joined long-term absentee Rodri on the sidelines. Ruben Dias is also unavailable, but Grealish returns to the bench. Haaland - who scored four goals in two games for Norway over the international period - leads the line up front.

This time last year, Tottenham sat second in the Premier League table, just one point behind Man City at the summit. Now, Ange Postecoglou's inconsistent side are 10 points short of last term's tally after 11 matches. However, they do boast an impressive record against City, who they beat 2-1 in the EFL Cup last month: Spurs have taken 17 points from the teams' last 10 league meetings, including one from a thrilling 3-3 draw in Manchester last season.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

17:08

After an eventful international break off the field for Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions now resume their quest for a fifth straight title. Their loss in Brighton a fortnight ago condemned Pep Guardiola to a fourth successive defeat for the first time in his managerial career, though he has since reaffirmed his commitment to the club by signing a new contract. Today, City will try to close a five-point gap to league leaders Liverpool by reversing their recent fortunes against Tottenham.
