Manchester City sail past Bristol City as Gareth Taylor praises Filippa Angeldahl

Manchester City progressed into the semi-finals of the League Cup after pummelling Bristol City 6-0 at Ashton Gate on Wednesday night.

Gareth Taylor’s side were 5-0 up by the break with Hayley Raso injecting energy into the side on the right flank that saw her score two goals within the opening 12 minutes of play. Khadija Shaw headed home the third on the half-hour mark swiftly followed by Lauren Hemp’s cut into the box to fire the ball into the bottom right corner with her right foot. Mary Fowler then slotted in the fifth goal a minute before the break.

Reflecting after the game, Taylor told MEN: “I thought we were really, really good. I thought we were really professional, we controlled the tempo of the play straight away and yeah, I was really satisfied.

“We're a little bit slow in our play at the weekend. We've spoken about that. But yeah I think the players were really active, really controlled the game well, they made sequences between each other with the ball and scored some really good goals.”

A particular player who stood out for the manager but was unfortunate to make the score sheet was Filippa Angeldahl.

“I thought she put in a good performance again. She's shone really well in this competition. She's getting most of the game time in this competition and is really pushing for a start because she's showing high levels,” said Taylor.

The Swedish midfielder has made an appearance in every League Cup fixture for the Blues, scoring in two. Angeldahl provided the only goal in the dying minutes of the game against Leicester City last Wednesday. She also gave the lead to City against Liverpool on the hour mark in their 2-0 win before the Christmas break.

The 25-year-old has also been involved in five Women’s Super League games so far this season although her only starting XI spot was in the opening 4-3 loss to Aston Villa in September.

City don't know their semi-final opponents yet. The game is due to be played on the weekend of the 8/9 February. Prior to that Taylor's side will make preparations for their Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round against Sheffield United on Sunday 29th of January.

Taylor said: "I think there's some really good stuff to take in this game that we can use on Sunday. I think we've practised over the last couple of days since [Aston] Villa on a number of things, a number of areas top end of the pitch and I saw that come out in abundance tonight. So biggest reinforcement on that, showing the girls what they've done really well and looking forward to the FA Cup on Sunday."
