Manchester City (4-1-4-1)
Ederson (GK) Had a mix-up with Manuel Akanji, thumped a clearance out, but made a number of vital saves. 8/10
Manuel Akanji (RB) Preferred instead of Kyle Walker at right-back, his muscularity was evident as was a feather touch when required. 7
John Stones (CB) The defender who stepped into midfield – except from centre-back not full-back – and his header to create Erling Haaland’s finish impressed. 8
Rúben Dias (CB) Near faultless. Stopped Jamal Musiala’s attempt with a long leg and cleared another from his line after the break. 7
Nathan Aké (LB) Kingsley Coman switched sides, which may have pleased as the Dutchman was outpaced, but saw Yann Sommer beat out a certain finish. 7
Rodri (DM) Terrific. Decorated the tie with the sweetest of left-foot curlers to make it 1-0 and launch City’s proud evening. 8
Ilkay Gündogan (CM) Impressive. Headed over, had a shot for City’s second saved by Sommer and was a force throughout. 7
Bernardo Silva (RW) Fine headed goal after being chosen ahead of Riyad Mahrez and showed why: his balletic feet dazzled. 8
Kevin De Bruyne (AM) Inventive and a danger, the Belgian popped up across the midfield and frontline zones . 7
Jack Grealish (LM) Quick feet and the slickest of backheels into Haaland to allow the latter to set up Silva. 7
Erling Haaland (CF) Made a hash of a gilded chance but his dipping ball in for Silva’s strike was a delight and then came his goal. 8 (Man of the match)
Substitutes: Julián Álvarez (for De Bruyne 68) 7
Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1)
Yann Sommer (GK) Erratic. Should have saved Silva’s header but made fine stops from Dias, Álvarez and Aké. Heart raced when Haaland nearly picked his pocket. 5
Benjamin Pavard (RB) Gündogan’s raids from deep midfield troubled and he made one last-ditch clearance. No impact the other way. 3
Dayot Upamecano (CB) A nightmare from him: his error allowed Grealish to find Haaland for Silva’s goal and he struggled for any kind of composure. 2
Matthijs De Ligt (CB) Could do nothing to marshal the defence he was part of in a match he will wish to forget. Quick. 5
Alphonso Davies (LB) Booked and replaced. Shot wide and was often troubled by the Silva-De Bruyne combination along his corridor. 4
Joshua Kimmich (CM) Watchful and able to intervene to stymie attacks until failing to close down Rodri for the opener. Had an attempt blocked. 4
Leon Goretzka (CM) Kimmich’s central midfield partner was anonymous apart from a single surge after the break that put Leroy Sané in. 4
Kingsley Coman (RW) One more ineffective visitor who felt Grealish’s studs early on and was a member of a misfiring attack squadron. 4
Jamal Musiala (AM) Bundled over Silva, saw Dias block a shot, but lost Rodri for his goal and was taken off. 4
Leroy Sané (LW) Bayern’s sole bright light. Forced Ederson into a second half save. Wandered infield, looked to shoot, left Akanji flailing more than once. 6
Serge Gnabry (CF) False-ish No 9 flitted about to zero effect so should be disappointed with his contribution. 4
Substitutes: Sadio Mané (for Musiala 69) 5; Thomas Müller (for Gnabry 80) 5; João Cancelo (for Davies 81) 5
