Newcastle United were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium after conceding a goal in each half.
Both Anthony Gordon and Callum Wilson had the goal glaring in front of them but the ex-Everton player got his feet mixed up before the number 9 striker skewed a shot well wide. After the break there were openings for Joelinton and Alexander Isak.
City enjoyed the better openings with Phil Foden's goal and a strike from Bernardo Silva sealed three points.
Here's how the players rated overall:
Nick Pope 6
Dealt well with routine moments. Foden got past three or four players before planting shot off Botman's boot. A couple of saves after the break but beaten by Bernardo wonder goal.
Kieran Trippier 6
Carried the team down the right in the first half. Gave ball away for second goal.
Jamaal Lascelles 7
Did what he does well and routinely cleared. And will be one of the few defenders to stop Haaland scoring, excellently setting tone with crunch tackle early on. A decent return despite defeat. Man of the match.
Sven Botman 6
Deflected Foden's shot past Pope. Recovered after the break but not his best outing.
Dan Burn 5
Was always going to find it tough with Foden running at him. A tough afternoon capped with yellow card after flare up with Erling Haaland.
Sean Longstaff 6
Presented with a good chance but saw it blocked. Went off after a crunching challenge from Nathan Ake.
Bruno Guimaraes 5
Looks nervous. Conceded one unnecessary free-kick that could have been costly.
Joelinton 7
Battled hard in the middle but yellow card for foul on Rodri means he will miss next two matches with ban.
Anthony Gordon 6
A first half chance came and went and while Gordon did OK he left plenty of room for improvement after an hour's work.
Miguel Almiron 5
Picked up a little after the break but didn't produce a cross or a shot in the match.
Callum Wilson 5
Was never going to get many chances. But skewed a great chance wide. Hooked on the hour.
Subs
Allan Saint-Maximin 6 (for Gordon 60)
Had a good sight of goal with a header. Made some impact.
Alexander Isak 7 (for Wilson 60)
Offered some final product with a couple of big moments. Probably ready to start a game.
Joe Willock 6 (for Longstaff 60)
A great cross for Joelinton.
Jacob Murphy (for Almiron 76)
Matt Targett (for Burn 86)
*Subs must play 15 minutes to gain a mark.
