Manchester bar chain launches inflation-busting £2.99 meals at its three sites

Manchester’s Revolution bars are saying to hell with inflation and the cost of living crisis by unveiling a new menu with meals starting at just £2.99. The bar chain, which has three sites in the city, introduced the menu last week.

On offer on its £2.99 range are its fish and chips, its burger and fries, the Asian salad, a margherita pizza or a chicken wrap with fries. It’s also offering a soft drink for £1.50 on top, or a bottle of beer or a pint for an extra £2.

The company, which is headquartered in Manchester, says that the offer will run for the whole of the summer and is available Sunday to Friday from 12pm until 9pm. Punters hoping to get a meal and still have change from a fiver can either book or turn up as a walk-in.

Revolution has bars on Oxford Road, Deansgate Locks and Parsonage Gardens in the city. It’s also doing other selected dishes for £6.95 with a drink too. The chain is implementing the offer in many of its 69 bars up and down the country, from Sheffield and Cambridge to Manchester and Glasgow.

Conceived in Greater Manchester, the chain was founded by Roy Ellis and Neil Macleod, who opened their first bar in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1991. They then opened their first Revolution bar, Russian-themed and focussing on vodka, in 1996.

It also created the spin-off bar brand Revolución de Cuba in 2011, themed around rum and Cuba with a branch on Peter Street.

The bars returned to profitability last year, after posting losses of over £26 million from the pandemic. It made £2.1 million profit in 2022.

However, earlier this year the company issued a profit warning, saying that it had slipped back into a loss of £91,000, blaming ‘continuous and varied external headwinds’ in the sector, as well as transport strikes, hot weather and inflation.

Its chief executive Rob Pitcher said: "We have faced well documented macroeconomic challenges which impacted profitability in the half year.

“The team have done everything they can to mitigate the cost headwinds and other factors outside of our control, and I am immensely proud of our people for delivering an amazing Christmas to our corporate guests, delivering an all-time record of pre-booked sales for the group.

“Walk-in custom was hampered by industrial action, reduced consumer confidence and the hot summer, and we look forward to increased guest confidence in the coming months as energy prices continue to fall from their previous peak and inflation abates.”
