Manchester Airport issues check-in warning to all passengers

Manchester Airport passengers have been given a check-in warning amid reports of huge queues and delays in recent weeks and months.

Passengers have been met with long queues to get through security, cancelled flights and plenty of disruption as the airport has been affected by a spike in demand for international travel - following the last two years of covid-related travel restrictions - and staffing shortages.

Chaotic scenes at the airport have included queues so long that they have run into car parks, luggage abandoned on the runway and flights being cancelled at late notice.

The airport's website advises passengers to be ready to go through security at least two hours before departure. This means those who need to check in at the desk or drop hold luggage should give themselves more time, so they can be ready for security with two hours to spare.

However, airport bosses are now warning people not to arrive for their flight too early. A tweet sent from the airport's official account on Thursday said: "Passengers should not arrive more than three hours before their flight. Those who arrive earlier may be asked to wait away from the check-in area until the recommended time, to reduce waiting times in security and the departure lounge."

People travelling to the airport overnight this week have also been advised to leave earlier, with ongoing roadworks on the M56. The works are due to end on Friday, August 5.

Full overnight closures will be in place between Junctions 7 and 5, eastbound. This means anyone travelling to the airport from the west, including Liverpool and Cheshire, can expect it to take longer to arrive at the airport than it usually would.

In a tweet earlier this month, airport bosses said: "From Monday 18th July to Friday 5th August 2022, #M56 #J7 to #J5 full overnight closures will affect passengers journey's to Manchester Airport. Please allow extra time during this period.

"A full overnight closure of the M56 Junction 7 to 5 Eastbound will be in place from Monday 18th July to Friday 5th August 2022, between 9pm and 6am (Monday to Friday only). Diversions will be in place and signposted. Motorists are advised to allow an extra 35 minutes for their journey, especially if travelling to Manchester Airport."
