A man who sexually assaulted a woman at Buchanan Street subway station has been ordered to pay his victim £1,000. Alistair McMillan, 38, of Priorscroft in Torphichen, West Lothian, approached the woman on the stairs at the tube station on August 10, 2021 before carrying out his attack.
The perv also made indecent comments of a sexual nature towards her. She then reported it to the British Transport Police (BTP) who launched a full investigation into the sex attack.
Transport cops launched a public appeal, as reported by the Record at the time, and subsequently issued CCTV images of McMillan in a bid to track him down. McMillan, who didn't know his victim, later handed himself into police to face justice.
On Friday, July 8, McMillan was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court over the attack after being convicted of offences under two sections of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009. The sheriff handed McMillan a one year community payback order, and ordered him to pay the target of his sick attack £1,000 in compensation.
And now, the BTP have welcomed his conviction and subsequent punishment.
BTP Detective Constable Andrew Shields said: “Sexual offending will absolutely not be tolerated on the rail network. Everyone has the right to travel and feel safe.
“We will always take reports of sexual offences seriously when they are reported to us. In this case following our media appeal, McMillan handed himself in to the police. We were then able to bring him before the courts.
“If you are ever a victim of a sexual offence or sexual harassment on the railway network, you can text us discreetly on 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency always call 999.”
