Man who 'loved adventure' killed in Cardiff city centre crash

A cyclist who died following a crash in Cardiff has been named as John Benedict Laurence, 65, from Roath. John, known as 'Ben' to many and fondly remembered by his nickname 'Grunt', died following the incident involving a bicycle and a Daf lorry shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, December 20.

His family has paid tribute to him and said: "As a family we are deeply saddened to find out about the sudden passing of Ben. He’s had challenges all of his life but did discover happiness with his long-term partner Liz for over 30 years before she sadly passed away several years ago.

"Since then, Ben has made the most out of life and his passion was riding motorcycles and visiting new places far and wide. He loved adventure and exploring and had so many plans which have now cruelly been taken away. He made many friends in his time here and I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I say how missed he will be. Rest in peace Ben."

South Wales Police has confirmed that officers are still investigating the collision, which took place on Leckwith Road and was attended by the Welsh Ambulance Service, South Wales Fire and Rescue, and South Wales Police.

Any witnesses who have not yet come forward and may have dashcam or video footage of the incident should contact police via live chat, the online reporting page, or by phoning 101 or emailing swp101@south-wales.police.uk. Quote reference 2200424961.
