Man who climbed onto roof in stand-off with police in Walker now believed to be down

A man who climbed onto the roof of a house in Walker in a stand-off with police is believed to have come down.

At around 6pm this evening eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the male who had climbed onto the roof of a property on Kingston Avenue was now down from the rooftop. Neighbours reported that he had been at the top of the building since around 12.40pm in a stand-off with police.

Earlier today, Northumbria Police confirmed that officers had attended the address shortly after 11.30am to carry out enquiries for an unrelated matter. Whilst in attendance a female occupant became aggressive towards officers and was arrested for breach of the peace.

The male occupant then climbed onto the roof of the property, where he remained for several hours.

Residents of neighbouring properties were evacuated from their homes and a police cordon was put in place around the address. One resident told ChronicleLive that she had to leave her home in her pyjamas and subsequently missed her shift as she was unable to return to her home to get ready for work.

Another resident said they had heard sirens this morning but didn't know what was happening until she saw people gathering at a police cordon which had been put in place on her street. They added that they didn't know who the man on the roof was or why he had climbed up there.

A third resident said that they returned to their home at around 1pm this afternoon to see police and a cordon outside his home but was unaware of what had gone on.

An incident response unit from the North East Ambulance Service remained close to the address throughout the incident and fire crew were also pictured close to the police cordon. Witnesses report that the cordon has now been removed.
