Man who caused 'spree of damage' near Aspley said he'd been spiked

Police got a call 'it is all kicking off, people are smashing things' after a man randomly caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to vehicles after his drink 'was spiked'. The anonymous call-out led to the arrest of Lewis Banks, 25, of Arleston Drive, Wollaton, after the 5.20pm incident on December 2 last year in Dulverton Vale, near Aspley.

Banks went on to plead guilty to causing criminal damage to a white Vauxhall Zafira, a white KIA Picanto, a white Sprinter van, and damage to a vehicle's rear wiper blade, body work and number plate, and possessing cannabis on his arrest. Banks was detained and was "resistant to police," said prosecutor Lynette Holland at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

Addressing magistrates on Wednesday (January 11), she said: "He was violent, clearly in drink when police arrested him. Essentially, Banks went on a spree of damage of several cars in the local area.

"He was kicking the cars, pulling windscreen wipers off, damaging the cars. Four vehicles, but a claim for damage is not stated". Insurance excess to the owners cost them nearly £2,000 in total alone though.

Solicitor Rob Keeble, representing Banks, said his client, who was living at his girlfriend's address, went to the pub and was given a pint by someone who told him subsequently, "his drink was spiked with a 'Daybreak' drug". He drank and took cocaine.

The next thing he remembered was waking up in police custody and had no recollection of causing the damage, and told officers he could not remember anything. But he was shown CCTV, leading to him apologising profusely for his actions, said Mr Keeble.

After hearing about the case, magistrates said they were concerned he was found in possession of cannabis when he committed the offences, and did not have a clue what he was doing - as he said he had a "spiked drink", and an association with drugs.

They felt he would benefit from probation intervention for a pre-sentence report. Unconditional bail was granted until sentencing on January 17.
