Man warned partner he would blow up their Lanarkshire home if she didn't come home

A man warned his partner he would blow up their Coatbridge home if she didn't return from her mother's

Police raced to Thomas Gibb's house and found him lying on the kitchen floor with the cooker on top of him and the gas turned on.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard this week that neighbours were evacuated amid fears of an explosion in Cuparhead Avenue.

Gibb, 47, admitted threatening or abusive behaviour and potentially endangering lives through culpable and reckless conduct.

The incident happened in the early hours of February 21 last year.

Lauren Cole, prosecuting, said Gibb had spent the previous afternoon drinking.

His partner was at her mother's home when Gibb phoned her about 5pm. When he told her he had been drinking, she decided to stay at her mother's.

The prosecutor stated: "The woman got another phone call from the accused at 1.15am.

"He told her, 'get yourself home. Get up here or I'll blow the place up. I've got the gas on and I'll do it'.

"She contacted the police. The fire service also attended and asked residents on either side of the accused's home to evacuate as a precaution.

"Police officers opened the front door and smelled gas immediately."

Gibb was lying on the kitchen floor. He had pulled the cooker off the wall and it was hanging from the gas supply hose and resting on top of the accused.

The switches on the hob and oven had been turned on.

Gibb, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, was helped from the house and later taken to hospital to be assessed before being transferred to the police station.

Defence agent Luke O'Curry said his client had mental health issues at the time and his actions were "a cry for help".

Bail conditions prevented Gibb returning to the family home for a time, but these were lifted at the request of his partner.

Mr O'Curry added: "The parties are reconciled and he says his life is back on track.

"This was a serious incident and it's not lost on him that there was the potential of harm to others."

Sheriff Joseph Hughes deferred sentence until next month for background reports.

He allowed Gibb to remain on bail but told him: "This is a serious matter.

"I have to look at all options."
