Man wakes up from motorbike accident thinking it's 1993 and asks wife to marry him again

A man who woke up from a horrific motorbike accident thinking it was 1993 asked his wife to marry him again.

Andrew Mackenzie, 57, from Virginia, and his wife Kirsty nearly died in a fatal motorcycle crash in June 2021 after a car skipped a red light and smashed into the pair.

The husband and wife were launched more than 50ft across the street leaving Andrew unconscious and in need of life-saving surgery.

He was airlifted to a nearby hospital along with his wife after suffering internal bleeding, punctured lungs, broken bones and concussions.

But when Andrew woke up three days later in hospital he thought he was back in 1993 after more than 29 years of his life had disappeared from his memory.

Kirsty told ABC13 : "He thought it was 1993. He just immediately, it was, 'Where's my wife? Where's my wife?' And I think that he thought I was working at the hospital.

"We could tell him over and over a few things, and then an hour later, it was like repeating everything."

Daughters Lorelai Mentzer and Amanda MacKenzie were at their dad's bedside when he failed to recognise them.

The family were given devastating news from medics who were unable to confirm if Andrew's memory would ever return.

Upon hearing the news, Kirsty convinced hospital staff to put Andrew in her room as she believed this would help aid his memory.

Andrew said: "One of my first things I remember is Kristy in a wheelchair bedside trying to worry about me taking care of myself."

Nurses were amazed after just 24 hours together in the same room Andrew's memory slowly returned.

Wife Kirsty revealed: "He started coming around asking me things and I was, like, amazed.

"There was happy tears, and within 24 hours, he was a new person."

After spending more than 11 days in hospital and rehab the pair were able to walk again.

And in August, Andrew decided to take the family on holiday for a well-earned break.

During the trip away he asked his wife to marry him for a second time - despite already being married.

Andrew said: "Luckily, she said yes. We'd already been married 37 years or whatever, and so it worked out."

Fortunately, Kirsty agreed to renew their vows and the pair have revealed the near-death experience has brought them closer.

Andrew said: "We're trying to take all the positive things from this, maybe even joking a little bit now."

Kirsty said the pair are grateful to have escaped the accident alive.

She said: "It was a nightmare. But, I want to live in gratitude. We have each other and that's all that matters."
