Man Utd urged to "replace" Harry Maguire after Burnley disaster as £130m transfer mooted

Former Manchester United flop Kleberson has urged Ralf Rangnick to replace Harry Maguire with Matthijs de Ligt after the United captain was exposed again during Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Burnley.

United were dominant against the Premier League strugglers and went in at the break in the ascendancy after Paul Pogba fired home.

But Rangnick's men were unrecognisable after the break.

That paved the way for Jay Rodriguez to restore parity; clinching a vital point for the Clarets in the process.

While few United players covered themselves in glory, it was another torrid night at the office for Maguire.

The England ace has been in rotten form since his heroics at Euro 2020 - and Kleberson believes United should ditch their club-record signing and instead move for de Ligt.

Join the debate! Do you think Man Utd should spend big to replace Maguire? Let us know here.

“Manchester United need to make some signings at the centre back position to replace Harry Maguire," Kleberson told Paddy Power.

"He’s a great player and leader, but there are too many moments that he just doesn’t perform, particularly when he’s one-on-one, or up against pacey players. He needs help defending.

“They need someone faster, stronger in the air, that can anticipate what will happen and that will be able to stop counter attacks.

“I like Matthijs de Ligt, Manchester United tried to bring him in a few years ago, but it didn’t quite work out. Manchester United need a player like him.

"They need to get someone in there to do a better job.”

Although Kleberson has previously insisted that United look "far more assured" with Victor Lindelof playing alongside Raphael Varane, the World Cup winner had still backed Maguire to come good after a spell out of the team.

But unfortunately, Maguire's form has continued to be erratic - and as a result, the £80million man's spot in the team is seemingly now under real pressure.

However, if United do have have designs on replacing Maguire with de Ligt, they'd have to almost double that sum to prise the Dutchman away from Juventus - with de Ligt reportedly having a £130m buyout clause in his contract.

Maguire was singled out by former United defender Rio Ferdinand for his part in Burnley's equalising goal as the Clarets fought back to snatch a point.

And Ferdinand suggested that Maguire's struggles this season could be linked to a hangover from Euro 2020, where he was exemplary for England during this history-making run to the final.

"This season, you’ve seen that [too many below-par performances]," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "I’m not sure if that’s a hangover from the Euros physically and mentally I’m not sure. There hasn’t been the consistency of a player you’d expect of that stature.

"Behind closed doors he will take responsibility for that, he doesn’t need to come out here and go crazy and he’ll iron it out.

"The challenge he made just over the halfway line, he’s lucky to stay on the pitch because I feel the striker is running in on goal, it’s a performance he’ll like to erase and get into the next game as quick as possible. But these things happen."
