Man Utd urged to replace David de Gea with Edouard Mendy should contract talks fall apart

Manchester United have been told to target Edouard Mendy if they allow David de Gea to leave the club.

The goalkeeper has been at the club for over a decade having been signed by Sir Alex Ferguson. The Spaniard is currently in contract talks with the club as he looks to extend his deal, which expires in June. But previously Erik ten Hag has appeared open to changing his No.1, which would open the door for a new recruit.

De Gea penned a mammoth deal, worth well over £300,000-a-week, back in 2019. He would have to take a pay cut if he were to remain at Old Trafford, which could be a sticking point in negotiations. As a result United have been urged by Louis Saha to consider moving for Chelsea's Senegalese goalkeeper.

He told BoyleSports : "Man United should take a punt on Edouard Mendy if De Gea leaves. De Gea is still right at the top level, but of course making mistakes like he did against Everton is never good. Over the years, De Gea has done tremendous performances to save the team and he deserves the time and credit for that.

"If De Gea doesn’t sign a new contract then a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would make perfect sense. He has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world the last few years and I’m not sure what happened."

De Gea himself, who remains the club's No/1, has played down the noise surrounding his future and is adamant his exploits at Old Trafford - where he has won numerous Player of the Year Awards - underline his value.

He said previously: “I don’t have to show anything, I have shown already for many years my qualities. I know people love to talk, but I’m used to that. I’m just performing as well as I can, helping the team and trying my best all the time. Experience makes it easier to block out the noise. I live a lot of things, I get through many, many difficult moments.

“I don’t care to be honest, I just focus on my games, on my training and on my team. I’m feeling great, I’m feeling really well. I’m helping the team, training well, feeling confident. Like the whole team, we’re playing well.”

Mendy himself has been in and out of the starting XI at Chelsea. He's currently injured, but Kepa Arrizabalaga has been afforded opportunities as he looks to re-establish himself with the Blues. Mendy has rejected the offer of a new deal and could be offloaded as the club continue signing another goalkeeper.
