Man Utd transfer round-up: Declan Rice issues plea as potential targets emerge

Manchester United are expected to be active in the winter transfer window after axing Cristiano Ronaldo last week - but acquiring a new striker in January will be no mean feat.

Already, a host of names have been linked with a lucrative move to Old Trafford. However, any realistic candidates will likely cost a premium price with clubs unwilling to weaken their squads midway through the season.

Extra funds could be made available, though, to aid Erik ten Hag in his bid to get United back into the Premier League's top four after a respectable start to the season. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news from in and around Old Trafford...

Rice issues transfer plea

Declan Rice has opened the door for a big-money summer move - putting long-term admirers such as Manchester United and Chelsea on red alert.

The West Ham midfielder opened up on his desire to play Champions League football and admitted that "you only get one career" during a press conference in Qatar.

Rice has established himself as a key player for England and with just 18 months left on his current deal at the London Stadium, is expected to spark a transfer scramble in the summer. Both United and Chelsea have previously been credited with an interest in Rice's services, while Liverpool and Manchester City are also thought to be admirers of the midfield maestro.

Rio Ferdinand has warned Manchester United that they will have to pay much more money to land Cody Gakpo in January after passing on a deal to sign him in the summer.

The coveted PSV Eindhoven star was one of Ten Hag's primary targets and is believed to be available for around £30million, but United instead pressed ahead with a big-money deal to snap up Antony.

It has been claimed that United are still interested in Gakpo ahead of the winter transfer window - but PSV could pocket double the £30m they were seeking in the summer in the wake of the 23-year-old's impressive form at the World Cup, where he as plundered three goals in as many games.

Scholes names Ronaldo replacements

Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to replace Cristiano Ronaldo in January (MUTV)

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United should move for Gakpo or Christopher Nkunku in January to fill the void left by Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old's abrupt departure last week means United are light on attacking options heading into the second half of the Premier League season.

And Scholes believes that Gakpo, who has been in fine form for PSV and Netherlands, or Nkunku, who has been heavily linked with Chelsea, would fit the bill for Ten Hag's side.
