Man Utd told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacking may have cost them top-four finish

Roy Keane has admitted Manchester United would be in a better position if they didn't sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and appoint Ralf Rangnick as Interim boss until the end of the season.

The 49-year-old was sacked back in November after winning just five of their opening 12 Premier League matches. His tenure ended following a 4-1 defeat at relegation-threatened Watford, with United sitting seventh in the table.

Having took over from Jose Mourinho in 2019, Solskjaer guided the Red Devils to a second-place finish and a Europa League final in his third season in charge. However, United struggled for form and consistency during the first few months of the campaign, leaving the board little choice but to part company with the former striker.

Rangnick took over on an Interim basis until the end of the season and it is safe to say he hasn't been able to deliver success, winning just 38% of his matches at the helm. And Keane believes United would have been better off keeping Solskjaer in charge.

He told Sky Sports: "They wouldn't have done any worse if Ole was still here. But the decision was made and you cannot keep looking back at the other managers. I would always argue managers should be given more time than they actually get but in the reality of top football clubs, there is no patience."

When asked about whether United would be in a better position if Solsjkaer had stayed, Keane replied: "Yes. But you've got to look at the last couple of games for Ole, we talk about leopards and spots with this group of players, the Watford game they never ran for him in that game. There's the Liverpool game but anyone can get ripped to shreds against them, but they gave up for Ole at the end."

Jamie Redknapp added: "If Ole had of stayed, it would've got to the point where it would've ruined his legacy. He had to go. It hasn't got any better, but for Ole it has done him a favour as he was struggling.

"The players weren't playing for him and it was becoming a hard watch for someone everyone has respect for in the game. But Ten Hag has got to come in and change it. These last three games are going to be hard now, every time watching United now is a tough watch."
