Man Utd target Thomas Meunier makes transfer intentions clear after bust-up

Thomas Meunier reportedly wants to leave Borussia Dortmund amid rumours he's on Manchester United's transfer shortlist.

The Belgium international, 30, plays at right-back and boasts a fine CV, winning 56 senior caps for his country and various honours with Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain and his current employers. He's also vastly experienced, playing more than 400 games at club level.

It's believed Meunier has fallen out with Dortmund manager Edin Terzic over his lack of playing time. He was left on the bench for their 3-2 home defeat to Werder Bremen on Saturday and was restricted to just 17 Bundesliga appearances last season.

As reported by German outlet BILD via Bulinews, Meunier told Terzic "I want to leave this place" after Dortmund's shock defeat at the weekend. Terzic's side were leading 2-0 with 88 minutes on the clock before a spectacular collapse at the Westfalenstadion.

It's believed Barcelona and United are interested in signing Meunier before the transfer window closes on September 1. Erik ten Hag reportedly sees the experienced defender as competition for Diogo Dalot, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka expected to leave Old Trafford.

United haven't won a trophy since their Europa League triumph in May 2017 and could do with some winners in their starting XI. Meunier has won trophies in Belgium, France and Germany - including three Ligue 1 titles and the DFB-Pokal.

The Red Devils have endured a nightmare campaign, losing 2-1 at home to Brighton on the opening day and suffering a 4-0 away defeat to Brentford last time out. Ten Hag's struggling side face Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Off the pitch, United fans are expected to throw a huge protest against the Glazer family's ownership of the club. Since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in May 2013, they haven't won the Premier League or Champions League, lifting just three major honours.

Rather than construct a successful footballing structure, United's chiefs have adopted a scattergun approach in the transfer market and sacked four managers - including Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourniho. Old Trafford is also in desperate need of maintenance.

Speaking about the possibility of joining Barcelona or United, Meunier once said: "Dortmund are already a big club, but Barca… That is unique. Just like Real, Bayern and United are in their way. In principle you don’t say 'no' to such clubs."

It's believed Dortmund would demand around £12.5million for Meunier's services. He has two years remaining on his existing deal after joining Dortmund from PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2020. The Belgian ace will turn 31 next month.

United have signed Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen this summer, with Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro expected to complete a transfer before the deadline. They remain interested in Ajax winger Antony and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, with Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to leave Old Trafford before the deadline.
