The reverberations of Cristiano Ronaldo's impending unveiling at Manchester United are being felt strongly as we enter the final hours of the summer transfer window.
The sensational return of the Portuguese superstar has no doubt filled the United fan base with boundless glee, however for Daniel James it has had a destabilising effect.
The Manchester club's activity in this window means they now have an embarrassment of riches in their forward line, with Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes all providing ample competition up top for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that The Athletic report United are open to letting the Wales international leave before Tuesday's 11pm transfer deadline, with Leeds United thought to be among those keen to sign him.
James' former manager at Swansea, Graham Potter, is also believed to be interested in taking him at Brighton, while Everton, Leicester City and Crystal Palace have all previously been linked with the winger.
The report adds that United value James somewhere "in excess of £20m", which is by no means pocket change.
However, CIES Football Observatory list his actual transfer value at potentially double that, claiming it ranges between £34.3m and £42.87m.
The CIES Football Observatory's algorithm takes a range of factors into account when coming up with a player's estimated transfer fee, with age and the economic level of the releasing club among the items taken into consideration.
The most recent valuation, posted on August 4, is actually a sizeable drop in where CIES valued him earlier in the year.
They had the 23-year-old at £65.85m just a few months ago, meaning his value has fallen considerably despite being arguably Wales' best player at this summer's European Championships.
Quite what United would be willing to accept for James, who has started two of the club's three Premier League games this season, remains to be seen.
But, following United's 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday, Solskjaer did reveal that there had been interest in his player.
"I'm not going to discuss individual players and names," Solskjaer said when asked about James.
"There have been a couple of enquiries for some of our players and with the signing of Cristiano we may give less playing time to a few.
"Dan is a Man United player at the moment."
James, who moved to Old Trafford from Swansea City two years ago, has nine goals and nine assists in his 74 appearances for the Old Trafford club.
