Mason Greenwood's Manchester United fate could ultimately rest with stakeholders - including the club's women's team and commercial partners.
United forward Greenwood remains suspended pending a club investigation into allegations he faced regarding his private life.
The England striker was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm back in October 2022.
Although the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges three months ago, Greenwood remains suspended, unable to train with or play for United.
United have confirmed that the internal investigation into Greenwood's conduct and what will happen to him has still not been completed. No decision on Greenwood's future will be made until after Saturday's FA Cup final encounter with Manchester City.
Senior club figures are still deciding what to do with the 21-year-old, who wants to resume his career but remains under contract at United until 2025.
It is understood that once the internal investigation is completed, United will speak to stakeholders to gauge their opinion on the decision made. These include commercial partners, supporters and members of United's WSL squad, to ensure the decision is met with the approval of all parties.
United have been determined to complete the season before reaching a decision on Greenwood's future – which could come as early as next week, after the FA Cup final.
Although there is uncertainty over the future ownership of United, with bids having been submitted to current owners the Glazers, it is understood the club could make a decision on Greenwood in advance of any takeover.
If so, the final decision on Greenwood's future will be taken by the Glazers, who will consult chief executive Richard Arnold before reaching a conclusion.
United boss Erik ten Hag has made a new striker his top priority this summer, with a bid expected to be made for England and Tottenham's Harry Kane. And in an interview with the Times, Ten Hag admitted that Greenwood has “showed in the past that he is capable of doing that [scoring goals]” but reaffirmed the final decision on his future wouldn't be his.
Greenwood, who has scored 36 goals in 130 games for United, made his last appearance for the club 16 months ago.
