Man Utd set to battle Liverpool for goalkeeper transfer amid David de Gea contract talks

Manchester United and Liverpool are considering a summer move for New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

Both clubs are in the market for goalkeeping reinforcements in the summer and the Serbia international, 23, figures high on their wanted lists. United are still talking to No.1 David de Gea about a new deal, while back-up keeper Tom Heaton is out of contract in the summer and Jack Butland’s loan from Crystal Palace expires at the end of the season.

Dean Henderson is set to return to Old Trafford from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest. But he is unlikely to be happy playing back-up to De Gea, meaning United are scouring the globe for new signings.

Liverpool, meanwhile, could well lose Caoimhin Kelleher with speculation continuing around his future, while third-choice keeper Adrian is out of contract. Petrovic joined New England last April and has earned rave reviews for club and country in that time.

United and Liverpool have been monitoring his form and they are set to continue having him watched through the Major League Soccer season ahead of a potential summer move. The keeper moved to the United States from Cukaricki in his homeland.

Newcastle targeting Southampton defender

Newcastle are keen to land Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu this summer.

Toon boss Eddie Howe is understood to be a big fan of the Ghanaian. The Magpies looked at signing him in January 2022 but no deal materialised.

However, they have continued to keep tabs on him and will look to see whether an agreement to take him can be reached at the end of the season, when he has just one more year to run on his contract at St Mary’s.

At 23 and with nearly 70 Premier League appearances under his belt, Salisu fits the profile of player Newcastle are targeting. His contractual situation means the fee to land him would not be enormous and there is a belief that he could be become a top star in the North-East.

Salisu is expected to leave Southampton in the summer for certain if the struggling side fail to stave off relegation, but, either way, Newcastle will be among the clubs looking to take him. He joined the Saints from Real Valladolid in Spain in 2020 for a fee of around £11million. Since then, he has become a full Ghana international, with three of his six caps won at the World Cup in Qatar.
