Man Utd seal Champions League place with Chelsea win to compound Liverpool misery

Manchester United have secured a place in next season's Champions League by thrashing Chelsea 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag's side came into the match knowing one point from their final two games would be enough to ensure a finish in the top four. Casemiro headed in Christian Eriksen's free-kick to open the scoring before Anthony Martial doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Bruno Fernandes then made sure of the three points with a third from the penalty spot after Wesley Fofana tripped him inside the area. Marcus Rashford marked his return with a rebound after some calamitous play from Chelsea to make it four before Joao Felix grabbed a consolation on the break.

The win took United onto 72 points in third place and ensured they will return the Europe's elite club competition in the 2023/24 season alongside Newcastle. Liverpool, in fifth, will have to settle for a place in the Europa League next season.

United will conclude their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham on Sunday before taking on Manchester City in the FA Cup final on June 3.

It was another miserable day for Chelsea, who had plenty of chances but were woeful at the back. Frank Lampard's side are 12th in the Premier League, having taken just 43 points from 37 games.

Lampard's final game in charge of Chelsea will come against Newcastle on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, before Mauricio Pochettino takes over the reins.

The win may have come at a cost for United, however, with Antony and Luke Shaw withdrawn. Antony looked to be in serious pain following a tackle by Trevoh Chalobah and required the stretcher in the first half.

Shaw was substituted for Tyrell Malacia at half-time as a precaution for an apparent back problem. Ten Hag will hope that both are fit enough for the FA Cup final against Manchester City in nine day's time.
