Manchester United scouts were in attendance at the Ernst-Happel Stadion as Austria faced Denmark in the Nations League on Monday night.
Former Red Devils interim boss Ralf Rangnick took charge of his second Austria game, having guided them to a dominant win over Croatia last week. Their second game of this year's Nations League campaign came at home to Denmark.
This is Austria's first season in League A, having been promoted from League B last time out. Denmark meanwhile are in their second campaign at the top level of the competition, having finished second in their group, which contained England, last year.
It appears that United are keeping tabs on Rangnick, despite his acrimonious exit from Old Trafford. This may be inadvertent though, with the players featuring in the Nations League clash more in their eye.
FA registered intermediary Paul O'Keefe revealed the clubs who had sent scouts to Austria's capital of Vienna to take in the game. Among them was United, with West Ham, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen also in attendance.
It is unknown who the United scouts were there to see in action, with players from both sides having been linked with moves to Old Trafford. But one man they will almost certainly have had a close eye on is Christian Eriksen.
The attacking midfielder has emerged as one of their top targets for the summer transfer window as Erik ten Hag looks to rebuild his team. Eriksen had impressed over the second half of the season to help Brentford secure their Premier League status for another year.
Mirror Football reported on Saturday that United have joined the race to sign the Danish international. Ten Hag is prioritising midfield recruits following the Red Devils' dreadful campaign under Rangnick's management.
The new United boss already had a close-up look at the 30-year-old ahead of his move to Brentford, as he allowed Eriksen to train with Ajax. Ten Hag was left 'hugely impressed' by Eriksen, who earned a re-call to the Denmark squad with his performances for the Bees.
He has an offer from Brentford to return to the club as their highest-paid player, though he may be tempted by the lure of European football. United can offer Europa League football, though they are competing with Tottenham, who have qualifed for the Champions League.
Eriksen also featured for Denmark in their win over France on Friday, playing all 90 minutes against Les Bleus. After kick-off against Austria was delayed due to a power cut, Eriksen struggled, though the visitors did go ahead.
Spurs star Pierre-Emile Højbjerg opened the scoring for Kasper Hjulmand's side, firing in from inside the box. If they held on, Denmark would move above Rangnick's Austria to the top of their group.
